Updated: Feb 24
i’m so proud to say that we have raised ! $161.39 ! for the Emergency Release Fund! i am continuously blown away by the support shown to this shop, and can't begin to express how proud i am to give that support back to our local communities.
the ERF is a NYC based, LGBTQ+ focused non-profit providing bail relief to transgender people forced into incarceration before trial. “Trans people face dramatically elevated risk of harm or death in pre-trial detention” and “are disproportionately victimized by the bail system.” it is the mission of the ERF “to ensure that no trans person at risk in New York City jails remains in detention before trial.”
the emergency release fund was created in 2019 by Martin Kaminer after the tragic death of Layleen Polanco - a trans woman who died in solitary confinement while awaiting trial at Rikers Island after being unable to post a $500 cash bond. Because the organization is completely volunteer based, 100% of every donation goes directly towards bail relief. the ERF also works to educate on legal proceedings, bail documentation, and the complicated steps of bail processing. they also provide access to safe housing, social services, and more.
as of june 2020, less than one year since their founding, they have successfully provided bail for over *200* people!
